Living in Harmony is a government funded program focused on celebrating and promoting further understanding of the culturally rich and diverse society in Australia.
Designed to encourage Australians to contribute to and build upon social unity, the program has a particular emphasis on the promotion of Australian values and a commitment to harmony and mutual respect.
RSL Care’s Pioneers Retirement Community, located in the culturally rich community of Longreach, is delighted to welcome the emerging Zimbabwean community.
There are three Zimbabwean Registered Nurses working at Pioneers plus family members at the local schools and working in other areas within the Longreach community.
This new Zimbabwean community inspired RSL Care’s Pioneers Retirement Community to embark on a year long Harmony community project focused on commitment, goodwill and understanding of the many wonderfully diverse cultures within the Longreach area through activities and workshops throughout 2007.
Originally from Zimbabwe in the south of Africa, Enoch Chiyangwa arrived in Longreach two years ago and describes Australia as "the land of opportunity".
For his first six months in Longreach Enoch lived on his own until his wife Ethel and youngest daughter Ruva joined him.
His older daughter is studying for a nursing degree in Melbourne, two sons are studying in Zimbabwe and a third son manages a farm in Malawi.
Enoch's nursing qualifications make him a valuable asset to RSL Care which finds it hard to find clinical staff for Pioneers in Longreach.
Enoch said he came to Australia to earn enough money to educate his children. "Australia is a land of opportunity for those who want to work hard to improve their standard of living," he said.
Since arriving in Longreach Enoch has joined the Assemblies of God church where he finds everyone very welcoming - he also enjoys the quiet solitude of fishing in the Thompson River.
Enoch described Zimbabwe as a land of lush forests, mountains and rivers with an abundance of amazing wildlife.
While the vast landscape and searing heat of Longreach have taken a bit of getting used to, Enoch and his family are grateful for the opportunities the town has afforded them.
If you have a story to tell about migrating to Australia we would like to hear it – please email libbychrzanowski@rslcare.com.au or call 07 3334 6216.
Two grade four students from Our Lady Roman Catholic Schoolin Longreach have won a slogan competition for the 'Living in Harmony' program.
Students were asked to come up with a Living in Harmony slogan and poster to be used for the program throughout 2007.
First prize went to Ellen Wall with her message: "The circle of friendship never ends – peace – let it light our way."
Second prize went to Renee Hughes with: "Love, peace, share, respect – Harmony Day."
Congratulations to all (41) students that entered the competition; a huge effort put in by all resulted in fierce competition that made it a tough competition to judge.
